Saksaywaman

Saskaywaman is an ancient fortress with enormous stone walls located in Cusco, Peru which was the capital of the ancient Incas of South America.  While many believe the Incas built the complex, there are also stories that the Incas told the Spanish conquistadors that they did not know how they were built or who built them, because they were there before the Incas moved into the area.

Saksaywaman – Stone fortress

Even more impressive than the size of the stones they used (up to 200 tons), is the way they fit the them together without the use of any mortar. The stones are so perfectly placed together in interlocking shapes that a single sheet of paper cannot be fit between them.

There are multiple theories as to how they did this, from a magical plant that melts rock or heat generated from giant mirrors.

Why this fascinates me:

We are starting to learn that many ancient sites around the world were built on top of much older sites.  Locations around the world that are ideal for establishing a settlement are constant and if a group of people came across an existing site, at an ideal location, they would simply build upon the existing structure. We still this this today, however in modern day we tend to demolish and rebuild.  In ancient times, building upon an existing foundation is not only logical, but has been found as fact in multiple site across the world.

I believe the Inca developed their civilization on top of an existing foundation which was much, much older.

Who built the original structure of Saksaywaman and how did they create a structure that could not be replicated in modern times?

The Great Sphinx

Egyptologists claim that the Sphinx was built around 2,500 B.C. by the pharaoh Khafre.  However, there is very little evidence of this.  There were no inscriptions claiming who built the Sphinx, which is very rare in ancient Egypt. They loved to lay claim to their incredible achievements. The only “evidence” that Khafre built the Sphinx is a small statue that was found near the monument.

There are some geologists who offer evidence that the weathering found on the Sphinx was due to hundreds, if not thousands of years of rainfall.  The problem is that in 2,500 B.C. the region around Giza was still a desert .  Heavy rainfall in the region ended thousands of years before the era of Khafre. You car read about the theory here.

Sphinx2

The original head was probably that of a lion, but then re-carved into a pharaoh.

Also, I believe the head of the Sphinx was re-carved in the image of a pharaoh (the Sphinx was rediscovered by ancient Egyptians buried up to its neck after the Khafre era). The head is not the same proportion as the body, which again, is very rare for the exact precision of the ancient Egyptians.

Why the Great Sphinx fascinates me:

1. I believe the Great Sphinx is much older than mainstream archaeology suggests for two main reasons:
– The water weathering suggest it existed during a time of great rainfall in the regions (about 12,000 years ago).
– There is no evidence that the ancient Egyptians built the Sphinx. It is more likely that they re-carved the head in the image of a pharaoh.

2. I think the ancient Egyptians found the Great Sphinx. The “dream stela” was erected in 1400 BC and tells the story of how it was rediscovered years earlier buried up to its head.

Take a look at the head in comparison to the rest of the body. Was the original Sphinx a monument of Anubis, the Egyptian jackal god.  What do you think?

Nazca Lines

The Nazca Lines consist of hundreds of geoglyphs carved on the desert of southern Peru thought to have been created around 400 A.D. What makes them so fascinating is the shear size of the images and precision of the geometric shapes that can only be seen by flying above in a plane or from the tops of hills miles away.

Most are geometric lines and shapes, but many are artistic depictions of animals and in one case a man, that some believe looks like a astronaut.

Once again, we do not know why they were created but some believe that it was a plea to their Gods in the hope to bring back the rain.

The Nazca people are also known for binding their heads to create what we call “elongated skulls”. This practice in amazing for multiple reasons that I will be discussed in another post dedicated to the “practice” (if in fact that actually practiced such a strange ritual).

Gunung Padang

The Gunung Padang megalithic site is a recent controversial find.  It is located in Indonesia and was originally thought to be a structure built on top of a hill dated 8,500 B.C. from the artifacts found near the site.  As recently as October 2014 a survey determined there is a large structure underneath the surface and carbon dating has determined that below the surface could be as old as 14,500 B.C.  You can find more about it here. It may be an ancient pyramid that is much, much older than the Great Pyramids of Giza.

Stonehenge

Stonehenge is a well known and very famous ancient site located in England. Many people are aware of its existence and its many wonders.

It is thought to have been constructed over hundreds of years beginning around 3,000 B.C. (but recently some postholes at the site have been dated to 8,000 B.C.). Like most other ancient sites scientists debate over how the gigantic 2,000+ pound stones were transported and lifted into place.

What I find most fascinating about Stonehenge is what the purpose was for such a seemingly important structure, built over a span of hundreds of years.

Ancient Mysteries

I love writing fiction in my spare time.  You can see some of my work and ideas here. My latest interest has been ancient civilizations and the mysteries that surround their existence and accomplishments.  Archaeology has recently unearthed evidence of “advanced” civilizations dating back to the prehistoric era (when we were supposed to be only hunter/gatherers living in caves). We have also studied ancient structures with little understanding of how and why they were constructed.  New discoveries can literally change our ancient history.

Angkor Wat

I enjoy using imagination to fill the holes of the unknown about our ancient ancestors for my fiction stories.

On this blog, I will post examples of these ancient mysteries and why I’m so fascinated in their secrets.
